Punjsbi Cinema’s latest heartthrob: Gippy Grewal

Gippy Grewal, Punjab’s newest superstar has managed to carve a niche for himself in the ever-growing Punjabi film industry by his own distinctive style and his flair for pop music blended with the right amount of ‘Punjabiyat’ which has endeared him to people from all age groups.

Gippy Grewal punjabi sInger is essentially a self-made man and hence, an inspiration for many who have no Godfather and wish to make it big in the movie industry. Born Rupinder Singh Grewal in a small village Koom Kalan in Ludhiana district, nobody gave this fine young man a chance of succeeding in the music industry. And a hotel management degree is certainly not the perfect starting point for a sparkling career in this industry. But that was Gippy’s childhood dream, and once he set out to achieve his dreams, there was no stopping him. His first album ‘Chakk Lae’ was a smash hit and brought him instant limelight in the Punjabi music industry. There was just no looking back after that.

Apart from producing mind-blowing singles such as Munda Hogaya Sharaabi and Sardariyan, Gippy Grewal punjabi singer has collaborated with almost all the big names in the Punjabi movie industry like Dr. Zeus, Yo Yo Honey Singh, Badshah, Dr. Hayer, Bohemia, Bhinda Aujla and Veet Baljeet. His association with Yo Yo Honey Singh has been exceptionally successful. Their song, Angreji Beat was used as a soundtrack for the Hindi movie Cocktail and was on the top charts for weeks.

Today, Gippy isn’t just one of Punjabi cinema’s most celebrated singers, he has dabbled into acting as well, and has done a tremendous job at that. He made his acting debut with a supporting role in the movie ‘Mel Karade Rabba’, and followed it up with a lead role in Jinhe Mera Dil Lutteya, which became Punjabi Cinema’s biggest hit when it released and for which Gippy received the 2012 Best Actor Award too. Gippy Grewal’s other movies like Carry On Jatta, Best of Luck and Bhaji in Problem have turned out to be super-duper hits at the box office. In fact, Gippy Grewal is also set to debut in Bollywood this year with roles in big-ticket films like Second Hand Husband and Dharam Sankat Mein.

Gippy Grewal wears a lot of hats and thus, he has also embarked on a career in dubbing. He dubbed for Jai Corteney’s role in A Good Day to Die Hard, which incidentally is the first Hollywood movie to be dubbed into Punjabi. Gippy is again leading the way here.

A family man, Gippy Grewal is married to Ravneet Kaur, and has two sons Gurfateh and Ekomkar. In fact, it is on his second son’s name, that he has launched his production house, Gurfateh Films. He has been announced best actor twice, in 2012 and 2015 for his roles in Jine Mera Dil Lutteya and Jatt James Bond respectively. He also won the Critics Choice Award for his role in Mirza-the Untold Story.

All in all, Gippy Grewal has shown what it takes to be Punjabi film industry’s latest matinee idol He is certainly a model for today’s youth to emulate.
